Dom marched past the vegetable patch on his way to the woods. The light was going, and mist spread over the grass, like the whole world was getting ready to go to sleep. Dom set out with determination, muttering Nicenesses under his breath, but as he went past the animals, the spot where they’d buried the pig, and then the lake, he slowed down.

By the time he reached the trees, he was already chickening out, trying to think of other ways to help Sol—hiding places, traps for the Doctor, or even offering to take his place. None of those things would work. Dom knew that, despite everything he had done, he would never be brave enough to attack or hurt the Doctor. There was no escape.

This churning wheel of thoughts kept his feet moving until he reached the fence. That and the memory of the Shuck’s eyes reflecting off the lake at night. He didn’t like the idea of one being released while he was out in the forest in the dark on his own.

High above him, the wire shone like spider’s silk. Buried alive, burned alive, evaporated. Dom tried not to think about how easy it would be to step over and not exist anymore—never to have existed, never to have had a problem, because his entirety had been undone.

He stopped a few yards from the fence.

“Hello?” he called. There was no sound, not even a breeze to make the leaves murmur to him.

“Hello?” he called again, and wrapped his arms around himself. “I know you’re there.”

Far off to his right, he heard something snap, and a rustling that started and stopped suddenly.

“I can’t stay long,” he called out.

The quiet stretched on. He was ready to turn back when he heard the rustling again, this time so close that he couldn’t write it off as the woods.

A face appeared through the tangle of branches. A smile.

Wild hair. Freckles.

“Clem,” he breathed.
